Former Vice Admiral Okhai Michael Akhigbe (Mike Akhigbe) was a distinguished Nigerian naval officer and statesman who served as the de facto Vice President of Nigeria during General Abdulsalami Abubakar’s regime from June 1998 to May 1999 when the military government was terminated and replaced by the Fourth Nigerian Republic.

He was born in the town of Fugar in Edo State. He pursued his early education at Afenmai Anglican Grammar School, Igarra, from 1961 to 1965. He later embarked on a military career by enrolling in the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1967 and graduated in 1969. Furthering his military education, he attended the Royal Naval School of Maritime Operations in Southwick, UK, in 1974, and later the Command and Staff College in Jaji, Kaduna, between 1982 and 1983. His academic pursuits also led him to the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru and the University of Poitiers in Rouen, France.

Akhigbe’s career in Military and leadership includes:​

  • Principal Welfare Officer of NNS Aradu: In this role, Akhigbe was responsible for the welfare and morale of personnel aboard Nigeria’s flagship naval vessel, demonstrating his commitment to the well-being of his colleagues.​
